Describe the room, not just the film

Note where the problem occurs and when. A brief such as “afternoon light on the west-facing workstations” gives an installer more to work with than “the strongest film.”

Solar comfort

Identify the affected rooms, times of day, and the daylight or view you want to keep.

Glare

Describe seating, screens, and the direction of troublesome light. Ask to evaluate a sample from those positions.

Privacy & appearance

Specify who should see what, from which side, and in which lighting conditions. Review the proposed effect both by day and after dark.

A specialist requirement

For a safety, security, or code-related objective, ask a qualified specifier to identify the required system and supporting evidence.

Identify the existing glass first

Collect the window manufacturer and model if known, pane construction, coatings, dimensions, and any existing damage. Ask the installer to verify what you cannot identify.

LLumar’s architectural guidance explains that product selection depends on the glass and that exterior applications require a film intended for that use. The useful lesson is to get written confirmation for your exact combination of film, glazing, and installation surface.

Ask before work starts

“Which compatibility guidance applies to my windows, who has checked it, and how will this installation interact with the window and film warranties?”

Do not rely on a blanket “works on all windows” answer. Ask the supplier to document any limitations or unresolved compatibility questions.

Read the rating in context

For architectural products, the NFRC label describes ratings for reference glazing systems. Its film-label explanation distinguishes visible transmittance, which concerns light, from solar heat gain coefficient, which concerns heat gain from the sun.

Ask which reference system is relevant to your project. Where certification is claimed, request the matching entry in the NFRC Certified Products Directory. A statement about following a test procedure is not, on its own, a product certification record.

Keep energy estimates separate from product ratings. Ask for the assumptions behind an estimate for your building, including occupancy, climate, orientation, existing glass, and energy rates. A percentage on a film sheet is not a promised percentage reduction in your bill.

Plan the installation around the property

For a home

  • Agree which panes and doors are included.
  • Ask about moving furnishings and protecting nearby finishes.
  • Confirm access, installation timing, and the care handover.
  • Check any required landlord or association permission.

For a building

  • Create an elevation or room-by-room glazing schedule.
  • Define access, operating hours, and occupant communication.
  • Record the agreed sample and acceptance process.
  • Confirm who owns warranty and maintenance records.

Agree how the finished work will be reviewed

Ask when and under what conditions to inspect the installation. Curing time varies by product and conditions in the manufacturer guidance reviewed here; do not assume a universal deadline. Record who will assess concerns and what the next step is if an issue remains.

For any protective or safety-related proposal, request the relevant test report, system configuration, installation requirements, and limitations. Ordinary tint selection does not establish storm, impact, intrusion, or other protective performance.
